Radians Earplugs, Nitrile Gloves, and PPE Training: A Quality Manager's FAQ

I'm the person who reviews PPE purchases before they reach the floor at a mid-size manufacturing plant. Four-plus years, 200+ unique items annually. I've rejected shipments, rewritten specs, and sat through audits that did not go well. These are the questions buyers and safety leads actually ask me—no fluff, direct answers.

What is Radians?

Radians is a full-line PPE manufacturer: safety eyewear, earplugs, hard hats, hi-vis vests, coveralls, and gloves. They're not the flashiest brand in the safety aisle. What they are is consistent. Are Radians earplugs any good?

Yes—with one big caveat. Radians makes foam, reusable, corded, and custom-molded earplugs. The foam ones we use carry an NRR of 33, which is right up there with brands like 3M and Honeywell. We've ordered them by the case for assembly lines and had no batch consistency issues.

But here's the thing: no earplug works if it's not inserted correctly. We did a quick observational audit once—about 40% of new hires without hands-on training had their foam plugs barely in their ears. They looked like they were wearing earbuds at a coffee shop. That's not a Radians problem. That's a training problem. The best earplug in the world is useless if a worker doesn't know how to roll, pull, and seat it properly.

Are Radians nitrile gloves worth ordering?

For most industrial tasks, yes. We use them for parts handling, prep work, cleaning, and general assembly. They come in different thicknesses and lengths, and the textured fingertip version gives decent grip on oily parts. We haven't seen the premature tearing we've had from cheap no-name gloves.

That said, I would not reach for nitrile as the default answer to every chemical exposure. Nitrile holds up well against many oils and mild chemicals, but it's not a universal barrier. Who is responsible for training workers on the use of PPE?

The employer. Full stop. Under OSHA's PPE standard—29 CFR 1910.132(f)—you have to train each worker on when PPE is needed, what type is required, how to put it on, adjust it, take it off, and maintain it. And you have to document that training. I've been through audits where we couldn't prove training was done. That is a painful position to be in.

What actually works in practice: put PPE training in the hands of frontline supervisors, not just the safety department. Supervisors are there every day. They can catch a worker who's skipped the safety glasses or stuffed earplugs in without rolling them. When we shifted our program that way, compliance picked up noticeably. A video module alone won't do that.

What does a K class fire extinguisher have to do with PPE?

It sounds like a tangent, but it comes up in risk assessments more often than you'd think. A K class fire extinguisher is for kitchen grease fires—commercial cooking environments. If you expect workers to use one, they need more than the extinguisher. They need heat-resistant gloves, a face shield or goggles, and in some cases flame-resistant clothing. The extinguisher is part of the plan. So is the PPE that keeps someone from getting injured while using it.

We learned this the slightly expensive way. Our kitchen areas had extinguishers mounted on the wall, but nothing next to them. No gloves. No face protection. We've since paired each K-rated extinguisher with a labeled cabinet containing gloves and a faceshield. Hopefully nobody ever needs it, but if they do, the gear is right there.

Does Radians offer custom-molded earplugs or specialty eyewear?

They do. Custom-molded earplugs are a real option, and bifocal safety glasses are another standout. Once we gave our warehouse team the bifocal style, the complaints about reading part labels basically disappeared. Aging eyes are universal. If you have a workforce that squints at screens and labels all day, bifocal safety eyewear is a quiet game-changer.

One note on custom earplugs: they require a fitting process. This isn't a grab-a-box-off-the-shelf situation. If you order them without an on-site fitting session, you're paying for something that won't perform as intended. Work with your distributor to make sure the fitting actually happens.

How do I know if Radians PPE is actually compliant?

Look at the label. Real, compliant PPE has markings: ANSI Z87.1 for eyewear, ANSI/ISEA 107 for hi-vis apparel, NRR or SNR for hearing protection, and specific glove standards for cut and abrasion resistance. No marking means no verifiable standard.

I once had a vendor push back on rejecting a batch of hi-vis vests because they were "basically the same" as a named-brand option—except they had no ANSI label. I rejected the whole lot. If we can't verify it, we don't buy it. Radians has been good about providing spec sheets and certificates. Always ask for them up front.

Bottom line: should you buy Radians?

From what we've used, yes—Radians earplugs, nitrile gloves, and eyewear are solid choices for a range of industrial settings. They perform consistently, meet accepted standards, and the pricing is fair. But they are not a substitute for a real PPE program. Training, fit testing, hazard assessment, and enforcement matter more than any logo on the box.

If you buy good equipment and skip the training, you've still failed your workers. Buy the Radians gear by all means—but invest the time in training your people to use it correctly. That's the part that actually keeps everyone safe.
