What still trips me up
I'm not a safety engineer. Let's get that out of the way first.
I'm an operations coordinator for a 45-person industrial maintenance crew, and in 2017, PPE ordering got handed to me because nobody else wanted it. Almost eight years later, I've personally made — and kept a list of — 17 significant ordering mistakes. Together, they cost around $9,300. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.132, PPE selection is supposed to start with a hazard assessment. If nobody at your company has done one, that's a conversation to have before you place an order. I won't give you a full ANSI/ISEA 107-2020 lecture here, but you need the basic idea: that standard divides hi-vis clothing into Performance Classes. Class 1 is for lower-risk settings like parking lots. Class 2 usually works for moderate-speed traffic areas. Class 3 is for high-speed roadways and night work — it generally calls for more reflective coverage and often comes with sleeves.
What I do now is write down three things before comparing colors: where the crew will be working, how fast the nearby traffic moves, and whether the job happens after dark. Only then do I look at products. Right now, we keep Class 2 radians safety vests for yard and warehouse work, and Class 3 radians safety jackets for roadside call-outs. Same brand, different class, different job. The class matters more than the logo.

Latex is a natural rubber. It stretches well and gives you good tactile sensitivity, meaning you can feel what you're handling. But it has two real limitations. Some people develop skin irritation or allergies to latex proteins, and latex doesn't hold up as well around oils, greases, and certain solvents.
Nitrile is synthetic. It contains no latex proteins, it handles oils and chemicals better than latex, and it tends to be more puncture-resistant. It's usually a bit more expensive per box.
For general maintenance work, nitrile is my default. Latex still has legitimate uses in certain tasks, but I wouldn't stock a maintenance shop based on price alone. I tried that once. Everyone with experience told me to go nitrile. I chose latex because it was cheaper. Within a month, two technicians reported irritated hands — not a full allergy diagnosis, but enough that they stopped wearing the gloves. The latex carton sat half-empty until we replaced it with nitrile anyway. The savings weren't real.

The cheapest hi-vis item isn't cheap if it can't survive an industrial washer. Faded fabric, peeling reflective tape, and broken zippers turn into reorders, replacements, and crews that look like they found their gear in a lost-and-found bin.
In March 2023, we showed up at a client site wearing a mix of faded vests and mismatched coveralls. A site manager asked me, in a tone that wasn't unfriendly but wasn't flattering either, whether our safety program was as disorganized as our clothing. That stung because it felt unfair — and because it kind of was fair. Perception is part of quality.
After that, we stopped buying the cheapest hi-vis gear in the catalog. We standardized on radians safety jackets and vests in the ANSI classes we actually need, all in the same color, so the crew looks like a crew. The vests cost a bit more each. They survive laundering better, and they look like we care. If your crew works on client sites, their clothing is part of your company's image before anyone says a word. We do this for any product we haven't purchased before, and it has saved us more than once. Last year, we were about to order 40 coveralls from a new supplier. The right way to test a sample is to have someone actually wear it for a few shifts and then put it through a wash cycle or two. Check the zippers, the reflective tape, the seams, and the fit after laundering. If workers won't wear the gear because it's uncomfortable or impractical, all the certifications in the world don't matter in practice.
Step 7: Keep a simple reorder record
Memory is not a system. For the first few years, every reorder started from scratch: which product code, which size distribution, which task it was approved for. That's how mistakes repeat.
Now we keep a simple spreadsheet with product codes, product names, size distributions, and notes like 'Class 3 only for roadside work' or 'nitrile only — latex caused skin reactions.' When an order arrives, we update it. When someone asks for more hi-vis vests or hearing protection, we don't re-derive the decision every time.
