No Single 'Best' PPE: Three Buying Scenarios to Consider
There's no universal answer for PPE buying
If your search bar looks like mine did when I took over purchasing in 2020—"best safety glasses," "PPE suppliers near me," "class e hard hat"—here's the first thing you should know: there's no single right answer. PPE purchases are situational.
I'm an office administrator for a manufacturing company with about 400 employees across three locations. I handle all of the company's PPE ordering, which works out to roughly 60–80 orders per year across 6–8 vendors, depending on the product category. In five years I've made plenty of mistakes, and they've convinced me that "what should I buy?" is the wrong place to start. The right question is, "why am I buying this?"
Every PPE purchase I've seen falls into one of three scenarios:
- Compliance-driven — you need to pass an audit or close a safety violation.
- Adoption-driven — your workers have PPE, but they don't actually wear it.
- Hazard-specific — a particular hazard requires particular equipment.
These scenarios lead to different decisions, different budgets, and different priorities. Once you know which one describes your situation, the product research becomes far more focused.
Scenario 1: Compliance-driven buying
When the purchase order exists because an auditor flagged a gap, you're in compliance mode. Priorities are straightforward: certified products, proper documentation, and a reliable supply chain.
Here's where buyers get tripped up. From the outside, it looks like all certified safety glasses are interchangeable. The reality is that documentation matters as much as the product itself. A pair of glasses with markings embossed on the frame still won't satisfy an auditor if your distributor can't produce the certification sheet. I found this out when a vendor sent a handwritten receipt for a $2,400 order. Finance rejected it, the expense bounced back to my department, and I ate the cost. Now I verify documentation before placing any order, not after.
This ties directly into the accounting side of things. When finance first asked me "is PPE a current asset?" I didn't have an answer. The short version: consumable PPE—gloves, earplugs, disposable coveralls—is a current asset, because it's expected to be used within a year. Reusable items like hard hats and safety glasses can be classified differently, depending on your company's capitalization threshold. This distinction actually matters for purchasing. We once had to reclassify an entire purchase order because I used the wrong line-item category for reusable products.
What was best practice in 2020 isn't fully best practice in 2025. Digital spec sheets and certification documents are increasingly available online; Radians, for example, publishes documentation for its full PPE line directly. Scenario 2: Adoption-driven buying
This scenario is less visible but more common. Your company purchased PPE, but workers leave it in lockers. They "forget" to wear it. They swap out the official gear for something from the hardware store. It's not a compliance failure yet, but it will become one.
The surface illusion here is that the lowest quote is the best deal. What people don't see is that the real cost of PPE is whether it gets worn. A $3 pair of safety glasses that 40% of workers abandon costs more than a $15 pair that 95% keep on. One recorded injury can wipe out a year's worth of savings from choosing cheaper gear.

And don't let the "buy the cheapest certified item" instinct dominate. That mindset comes from an era when most safety equipment was heavy, boxy, and similarly uncomfortable. That era is long gone—the range of designs now available offers real differences in comfort and wearability.
Scenario 3: Hazard-specific buying
This scenario is the most direct. You know the hazard, and you need equipment matched to it. The challenge is avoiding both under- and over-specification.
Case in point: hard hats. A Class E hard hat is rated for electrical protection against live conductors up to 20,000 volts. For electricians or utility crews, that rating is essential. But for general construction work, a Class E hat might be heavier and less comfortable than a standard one. Over-specifying isn't harmful from a safety standpoint, but it creates adoption problems, which loops you right back into Scenario 2.
Shooting safety glasses follow the same logic. Range work requires ballistic-rated lenses and a frame design that fits comfortably with hearing protection. When I outfitted a shooting range program for a client, I looked at several brands. Bolle safety glasses are solid—good optics, long track record—and I get why many range managers default to them. If you're not sure which bucket your purchase falls into, take two minutes and answer these:
- Who initiated the request? Safety officer or auditor → compliance. Operations or workers → adoption. Incident report → hazard-specific.
- What happens if nobody wears it? If the honest answer is "nothing," you're wasting money. That's a box-checking exercise, not a purchase.
- What does your hazard assessment say? Let the assessment drive your specs. No electrical hazards on the list? A Class E hard hat is nice-to-have, not must-have.
Once you've identified the scenario, product comparison becomes a different exercise. You're not asking which brand is best. You're asking whether a specific product solves the problem sitting in front of you.
What's changed, and what hasn't
PPE procurement has evolved significantly since 2020. Online ordering, digital certification documents, and a much wider range of ergonomic products have made this job easier. The industry continues to shift—what was best practice five years ago doesn't fully apply today, and the gap between low-end and thoughtfully designed gear is wider than ever.
But the fundamentals remain: buy certified equipment, make sure it fits the people wearing it, and understand your reason for purchasing before you compare specs. Nail those, and the right answer usually becomes apparent.
