Look, I'm not saying every budget option is bad. I'm saying the spec sheet is non-negotiable. I ask a simple list of questions now, in this order:

  1. What standard does this product meet? Name the exact standard and edition.
  2. Who tested it? What lab?
  3. Is that test report available before purchase?
  4. What fees are NOT in the quote? Shipping? Testing? Certification paperwork?

If the vendor hesitates on any of these, that's a red flag. Not necessarily because they're hiding something terrible, but because they're used to selling on price instead of evidence.

The vendor who lists everything upfront—specs, standards, fees—might not have the lowest number on the quote. But they'll usually cost less in the end. That's the version of trust I can measure.
