There isn't a single best safety gear setup. That's the first thing I tell clients when they ask what to order. Before you click buy on anything, run your own version of the triage I use:

  1. What is the hazard? Impact, splash, noise, dust, falling objects—each one points to a different product category.
  2. Where is the work happening? Indoors, outdoors, wet, cramped, at height—same hazard can need different specs.
  3. What does compliance require? ANSI, OSHA, ASTM—these are the minimums, not the whole decision.

Radians Polarized Safety Glasses: When They Make Sense

If you're working near roads, water, snow, or anything reflective, polarized lenses are worth the upgrade. For DOT workers, survey crews, and drivers, that can make the difference between seeing a puddle and guessing where it is.

But there's a catch. Polarized lenses can make LCD screens harder to read. If your crew is jumping in and out of a truck with a tablet, they might spend more time tilting the screen than watching the road. In that case, a non-polarized lens with an anti-fog coating often works better.

Whatever you choose, check for the ANSI Z87.1 marking. Under OSHA's eye and face protection standard (29 CFR 1910.133), the glasses need to meet an approved impact standard. Hearing protection is where the 'right for the situation' idea gets real. Foam earplugs work if people insert them correctly, but a lot of workers don't. They roll them loosely, pop them in, and end up with an NRR that's theoretical.

That's why the Radians custom molded earplugs deserve a closer look. Unlike foam, you don't roll them down. You pull the ear up and back, insert the plug, and let it seat against the ear canal. I've been using a set on and off for about a year. The advantages: they're reusable, washable, and a lot harder to lose. The downside: they need to be clean to seal properly. In a dusty environment, disposable foam plugs might be more practical.

Radians offers disposable coveralls in several classes, and the right one is based on the task, not the budget. It's tempting to think you can just compare the ANSI number and be done. But identical ratings can feel very different in the field—ventilation, seam strength, fit. If you're ordering for a crew, get one sample and have someone climb a ladder in it before committing to a case.

My rule of thumb: if you can feel the hazard on your skin, the coverall isn't doing its job. A painter's overspray soaking through a cheap suit changed our policy on this. We started buying microporous coveralls for anything with a liquid component. It cost a few dollars more per suit, but saved a lot of uncomfortable calls.

We paid $80 in overnight shipping, but that was a lot cheaper than missing the audit window.

First, look for an ASTM F2413 label. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.136, if there's a risk of foot injury from falling or rolling objects, employees need protective footwear that meets an ASTM standard. A boot can look like a work boot and still be soft-toe. If a pallet drops on it, that's a big problem. Search by the standard, not just by the word 'safety.'

Second, check the seller and the return policy. Amazon listings can be first-party or third-party. If you're buying for a site audit, you don't want to explain to an OSHA inspector that the boots looked fine in the photos.

Third, order a half size up if they're going to be worn with thick socks. That's not scientific, just experience. A new pair of boots that pinches on day one usually ends up in the locker room, which defeats the whole purpose.

How to Know Which Scenario You're In

Still not sure? Use the 80/20 rule. If 80% of the crew's day is outdoors in bright conditions, buy polarized eyewear. If 80% of the noise exposure is from occasional power tools, a lower-profile reusable earplug might be fine. If 80% of the task is just dirty, a basic disposable coverall is enough. Design for the majority of the work, and handle the exceptions with task-specific gear.

The conventional wisdom is to always buy the highest NRR or the heaviest boot. My experience with 200+ rush orders suggests the opposite: the best PPE is the one that gets worn. As long as the rating clears the required level, comfort and fit often lead to better compliance than an uncomfortable 'maximum protection' option.

Radians is a brand I keep coming back to for a lot of these scenarios, especially eyewear and hearing protection. But I don't recommend it for everything. If you need chemical splash protection with a specific permeation rating, you need to verify the coverall's fabric against the chemical, not just the brand. No manufacturer should be a default. The standard and the hazard are the defaults.

So the real question isn't 'is Radians good?' It's 'is this Radians product right for this hazard?' Answer the three questions at the top of this article, and you'll know. And if you're still stuck, call a distributor who's willing to say no once in a while. That's usually a sign they're paying attention.
