In March 2024, a chemical spill forced me to admit I wasn't picking the right products at all.

I'm the office administrator for a 140-person construction services company. I manage most of our safety supply ordering—about $180,000 a year across 12 vendors. I report to operations and finance, which usually means I'm stuck between 'get the best price' and 'make sure nobody gets hurt.' I thought I could do both by buying smart. Then a 5-gallon drum of industrial cleaner tipped over in the maintenance bay.

The chemical was a concentrated alkaline degreaser. The SDS said 'wear suitable protective clothing.' That was it. We had standard coveralls in the maintenance closet and a box of nitrile gloves from another task. The worker doing cleanup wore those gloves and a pair of cheap coveralls. No one was severely injured, and I'm grateful for that. But by the end of the day, his coveralls were visibly damaged. The fabric looked like it had been eaten by the chemical.

What Changed My Thinking

A few days later, our safety consultant asked me two questions: What chemical was it, and what did the SDS say? I read the SDS again. It said 'chemical-resistant clothing.' It didn't list a specific material. I didn't know whether our coveralls were chemical-resistant. They weren't.

That's when I realized I'd been treating PPE as one giant category. A hi-vis vest, a hard hat with chin strap, and a chemical-resistant coverall are all PPE, but they answer completely different questions.

We already ordered Radians for the road crew. The flagging crew wears Radians safety shirts and the Radians Surveyor Safety Vest Class 3 SV59-3ZOD. I picked that vest because the product description was specific: ANSI/ISEA 107, Class 3, with reflective tape and a breakaway design. I didn't have to guess what I was getting.

For overhead work, we order a hard hat with chin strap for anyone on a boom lift or working near a leading edge. The one we use lists ANSI Z89.1 on the product page, and the chin strap is a replaceable part. That sounds basic, but when you're comparing 20 vendors, it saves a ton of time.

In winter, we buy insulated coveralls for crew members working outside in unheated lots. They're warm and high-vis. But they are not chemical-protective coveralls, and I now make sure the labels in our inventory system say that.

Here's what I know now:

  • Gloves: Nitrile is common, but not universal. Some chemicals need butyl or neoprene. The manufacturer's glove selection chart matters more than the brand name.
  • Eye and face protection: Chemical splash goggles or a face shield over safety glasses. Standard safety glasses leave too many gaps for splash.
  • Body protection: Chemical-rated coveralls or aprons. Regular work coveralls are not designed for liquid chemical splash.
  • Footwear: Chemical-resistant rubber boots if there's a chance of floor contact. Leather work boots are not a puddle barrier.

And if the chemical creates vapors or fumes, you're now in respirator territory. That's a separate conversation with a much longer answer.

The $2,400 Mistake

Here's the part that still bugs me. We saved maybe $180 by buying the budget coveralls instead of a chemical-rated alternative. After the spill, we spent roughly $2,400 on cleanup supplies, disposal, replacement clothing, and overtime. If I remember correctly, the total was around $2,400. It might have been a little more.

I've learned to ask 'what's NOT included?' before asking 'what's the price?' That applies to transparent pricing, and it applies to PPE specs too.

One vendor quoted us a real price for chemical-resistant coveralls. Another quoted a lower price for something that looked similar but had no chemical-resistance claim. The lower quote wasn't a bargain. It was a different product with the same shape.

Per FTC advertising guidance, claims like 'chemical-resistant' should be truthful and backed by evidence. I now treat a vague 'protective' label as a red flag, not a certification.

What I'd Do Differently

I still kick myself for not reading the SDS before ordering those coveralls. If I had read it, I would have flagged the need for chemical-resistant clothing long before the spill.

Now my PPE checklist looks like this:

  1. Find the hazard first. What chemical, what task, what possible exposure?
  2. Ask for a standard. ANSI/ISEA 107 for hi-vis, ANSI Z89.1 for hard hats, ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 for eyewear, and a chemical test standard for gloves and coveralls.
  3. If the vendor can't tell me what standard the product meets, I don't buy it.
  4. Check the SDS before assuming 'protective clothing' means our current coveralls.

Does that mean every product needs to be the most expensive option? No. It does mean the lowest-priced option is only a deal if you can verify what it's actually supposed to do.

We still order Radians safety shirts and the Radians Surveyor Safety Vest Class 3 SV59-3ZOD for high-visibility work. We still order a hard hat with chin strap for overhead work and insulated coveralls for winter. But I no longer assume that all of that gear can handle every risk. Each piece has a job, and knowing the job is the real safety step.
