Radians PPE FAQ: What a Procurement Manager Learned About RadWear Vests and Type 2 Hard Hats

I’m not a Radians employee. I’m a procurement manager at a 145-person metal fabrication shop, and for the past six years I’ve tracked roughly $180,000 of PPE spending in a spreadsheet—every order, every line item, every fee that showed up after the quote. Radians entered our rotation in 2023, and once the team realized I did the homework, the same questions kept landing on my desk.

This isn’t a product pitch. It’s the FAQ I end up answering anyway, using the standards and the cost logic I check before I commit budget.

1. Where is the actual Radians official website, and why does it matter?

The Radians official website is radians.com. I use it less for shopping than as a reference point: it shows the full product line and lists authorized distributors. When a reseller listing shows a suspiciously low price for a Radians goggle or vest, I can check the model and compliance details before issuing a PO.

The reason I’m careful is that we got burned once. I said, “same SKU as the Radians catalog,” and the seller heard, “close enough is fine.” What arrived were clear glasses with no ANSI Z87.1 marking on the frame or lens. (Should mention: that seller’s return policy made the mistake worse.) We lost two days and paid return shipping.

So yes, the official website matters. Not because every reseller is dishonest, but because it is the fastest way to confirm what genuine product looks like before your money moves.

2. Which Radians RadWear safety vest class should I pick?

RadWear is Radians’ hi-vis line. Before you pick, note that vest classes under ANSI/ISEA 107-2020 are not the same as hard hat classes under ANSI/ISEA Z89.1. We mixed those up early: I asked for a “Type 2 hard hat,” the message got passed as “Class 2,” and somebody started comparing high-vis vests to hard hats. We discovered the mismatch when the order arrived and half of it made no sense.

For the vest itself, the class is tied to the work situation, not the brand. A Class 2 vest is the typical starting point for road work, loading docks, and warehouse areas. Class 3 is built for higher-speed traffic and situations where you need coverage on the arms. A more expensive Class 3 garment is not automatically the safer buy if it is too hot or heavy for the job, because workers will stop wearing it. That’s a compliance problem, not a comfort preference.

One cost note: mud, grease, and UV exposure all dull retroreflective material. Budget for a second vest so one can be washed while the other is worn. That usually beats paying for a higher class than the hazard assessment calls for.

3. Is a Type 2 hard hat worth the cost difference versus a Type 1?

Type 1 and Type 2 in head protection come from ANSI/ISEA Z89.1. Type 1 is tested for impact to the top of the head. A Type 2 hard hat is tested for top impact plus lateral impacts—front, back, and sides—and it typically uses a foam liner to absorb those hits.

In a shop with racks, low beams, and forklifts, I would call Type 2 the default rather than the upgrade. A lot of head contact in our facility is not a falling object; it is a person straightening up under a beam or catching the side of their head on a rack edge. That is exactly the case where a Type 1 shell is not designed to help.

At order volume, the difference is usually a few dollars per hat, not a budget line item. When we ran the comparison for 120 hats, I still hesitated before signing—it was $400-plus I had not planned for. But the Type 2 hats also came with better suspension options that our crew preferred, and wear rates went up. (Should mention: no hard hat lasts forever, and any hard hat that takes a solid impact should be replaced, per the manufacturer’s guidelines.)

4. What welding safety equipment should get budget first?

For welding, the budget order should follow the hazard order, not the sales order. In my view, personal protective equipment is the second layer. First is fume control: local exhaust or the right respirator. A $300 air-purifying respirator is wasted money if nobody wears it next to a fume plume, but ventilation is not always a line item buyers control.

After that, the order is: a welding helmet with the correct filter shade for the process; flame-resistant clothing and gauntlet gloves; and eye protection for grinding and chipping nearby. The shade number is not “the higher, the better.” It depends on the process and amperage, and the standard reference is ANSI Z49.1. I also keep impact-rated eyewear on the list for everyone near the grinding station—not just the welder.

On auto-darkening helmets: buy a decent one if the budget allows, because a helmet that feels comfortable is one the welder will actually keep down. If budget is tight, a quality fixed-shade helmet is better than a cheap auto-darkening unit that is slow to switch. Don’t hold me to the exact price, but the mid-range auto lenses we bought cost about 2.5× the fixed shade.

And for what it is worth, Radians was not our source for the specialized welding hood. A broad PPE catalog does not have to be the answer for every specialty item. We use Radians more for the shop around the welder: hearing protection, impact eyewear for grinding, and hi-vis vests for areas where forklifts run.

5. How do I make work boots not stink?

This is the question I get more often than any standard-related one, so here it is honestly: Radians does not sell work boots, and this is not a product pitch. Foot odor is bacteria and fungus multiplying in a warm, damp boot. You fix it by removing moisture and giving boots time to dry.

In my experience, the routine that works is: own two pairs and rotate them so each pair gets at least 24 hours to dry between shifts; pull the insoles out at the end of the day; and stuff boots with cedar shoe trees or crumpled newspaper. Do not set boots on a heater or throw them in a dryer. High heat can break down adhesives and waterproof linings—the repair cost lands on you.

Socks matter more than sprays. Wool or synthetic moisture-wicking socks cost a bit more, but they pull sweat away from the skin. Replace insoles a few times a year rather than replacing boots every few months. If odor stays after two weeks of consistently drying boots, the worker may need to treat the skin side too, not just the boot.

Why does a safety buyer care? Wet boots lead to blisters, and a worker with painful feet will not lace up properly or will skip the boots entirely. Plus, a boot that is falling apart from the inside has already stopped doing its structural job.

6. What is the hidden PPE cost that I keep missing in quotes?

The hidden cost is whatever is not on the first page of the quote. I have learned to ask “what is NOT included?” before I ask about price. A unit price can look great on a spreadsheet and disappear under freight charges, line-item fees, order minimums, and restocking penalties.

In Q3 2024, I compared quotes from several vendors for the same hi-vis vest. Vendor A quoted a slightly higher unit price but included freight and listed every fee upfront. Vendor B had the lower headline price, then added a processing fee per line and freight on the back end. I almost went with Vendor B based on the first column. It ended up being about 7% more expensive once the real invoice arrived. Put another way: the “cheap” option costs us more and delayed the order by a week.

That experience is why our procurement policy now requires three written quotes and a total-cost sheet. And to me, a vendor that shows the complete price structure—even when the total looks higher at first—is easier to trust for next year’s budget. That, not brand loyalty, is what keeps a supplier on our list.
