Overalls vs. Coveralls: A Last-Minute PPE Buyer's Guide to Radians Gear

If the job calls for coveralls, don't substitute overalls. The words are often used interchangeably, but the protection isn't the same—and when you're buying safety gear against a deadline, that distinction is the one that matters most. For full-body protection against splashes, dust, or overhead work, choose coveralls. If you only need to keep paint, mud, or grease off your clothes from the waist down, overalls are fine and often cooler.

I've learned this from coordinating more than 200 rush PPE orders in the past six years. My role is the one who gets the phone call when a compliance gap is discovered on Tuesday and the work starts Friday. In that world, small differences create big delays. That's why I lean on brands like Radians—not because they're perfect, but because their products are predictable.

Overalls vs. Coveralls: The Practical Difference

Here's a simple memory hook: if the garment has sleeves, it's coveralls. If it's a bib-and-suspenders style without sleeves, that's overalls. If you ask me what causes emergency order chaos, it's usually not the main item. It's accessories. Hard hat accessories are often model-specific. A one-size-fits-all sun shade or ear muff isn't really one-size-fits-all. It depends on the geometry of the shell, the mounting clips, and whether the helmet has accessory slots.

If you're not sure, buy coveralls. They give you more protection and can be worn for a wider range of tasks. Overalls are better for light, dirty work where full coverage is overkill. Pair those decisions with hard hats, reflective vests, and safety glasses from a brand whose specs you trust, and you'll be in good shape.

Radians is a strong option, but I'm not saying it's your only option. If you already have a brand that ships fast, labels clearly, and fits your workforce, stick with it. The brand isn't the point. The standardized spec is.

The exception is severe hazards. If the job involves chemical splash, arc flash, fire, or molten metal, you need a specialized garment certified for that specific risk. No general-purpose coverall is a substitute for a chemical suit or arc-rated clothing. Don't let a fast deadline push you into bypassing the right standard.

When possible, order samples and have your crew try them on. When that isn't possible, at least pick a supplier and brand that give you clear numbers and a phone number. That's the whole trick—fast, accurate, and honest about what you don't know.
