Net PPE is an accounting term. Full stop. It stands for property, plant, and equipment minus accumulated depreciation, and it is not a type of safety gear. I know it sounds obvious once you see it in writing. But the safety world uses the same three letters for personal protective equipment—hard hats, safety glasses, earplugs, hi-vis vests, work gloves—and I've spent six years buying that stuff for a mid-sized manufacturing company. The collision between the two meanings happens more than you'd think.

Here's a simple version. Say a company buys a machine for $120,000 and has recorded $40,000 of depreciation against it. That machine contributes $80,000 to net PPE. Do that across every fixed asset the company owns, add it all up, and you get the net PPE line on the balance sheet.

Notice what is not in that number: disposable earplugs, safety glasses, work gloves, and just about anything your workers wear out or throw away. Those are expenses. They should hit the income statement in the period they're used, not sit in a long-term asset account.

Hearing Protection: Look Past the Unit Price
